A story ranked high on AI news aggregators this week claimed Perplexity added Grok 4.6 as a model option, matching Claude Fable 5 on benchmarks at 60% lower cost. Two of those three claims check out cleanly. The third — the 60% figure — actually understates the real gap once you compare Grok 4.6 to Fable 5 specifically, rather than to a different, cheaper Claude tier.

What Perplexity actually shipped

Perplexity's changelog for August 2026 lists four model additions in sequence: Grok 4.6, NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Ultra (nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b, $0.25/$2.50 per million tokens), NVIDIA Nemotron 3.5 Lightning (nemotron-3.5-lightning-30b-a3b, $0.0115/$0.17 per million tokens), and DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731 (1M-token context). The Grok 4.6 entry reads exactly as SpaceXAI's own model identifier: xai/grok-4.6.

That's worth sitting with before repeating the headline verbatim. This landed as infrastructure, not a marketing push. Compare it to how Perplexity announced Grok 4.5 in July: a public post from the company's own account — "Grok 4.5 is now available as an orchestrator model in Computer for Consumer Pro and Max subscribers. We evaluated it against five other orchestrator configurations on WANDR. It scored higher than every other configuration at roughly half the cost of Opus 4.8." — with a benchmark chart attached. No equivalent consumer-facing post for Grok 4.6 turned up in this research. The API support is real and dated; a splashy "we picked Grok 4.6" announcement is not confirmed as of this writing. If you're citing this story, cite the changelog entry, not an implied press release.

This is also not Perplexity's first pass at chasing cheaper frontier-adjacent models. explainx.ai covered the pattern already this summer with GLM 5.2 as a research-preview Computer orchestrator at roughly a third of Opus's cost in July. Grok 4.5 then took over the orchestrator role from Claude Opus 4.6 days later, evaluated on Perplexity's own WANDR benchmark, at roughly half Opus 4.8's cost. Grok 4.6's API addition fits the same shape: Perplexity is a distribution layer over many labs' models, so it can route to whichever vendor wins the intelligence-per-dollar trade that week, instead of committing to one.

The pricing math: where "60% cheaper" actually comes from

Here is the verified per-token pricing, pulled from each vendor's own list price:

The "60% lower cost" figure that's circulating matches Grok 4.6's input-token discount against Claude Opus 5 — a lower, non-flagship Claude tier — almost exactly. It also happens to match the input discount against GPT-5.6 Sol. It does not match the discount against Fable 5, which is the model the same headline claims Grok 4.6 "matches." Against Fable 5 specifically, Grok 4.6 is priced at one-fifth the input rate and roughly one-eighth the output rate.

This is a case where the correction runs in the opposite direction from the usual aggregator inflation. The number isn't wrong because it overstates the story — it's wrong because it understates it, most likely by attaching a real discount figure (vs. Opus 5) to a different comparison (vs. Fable 5) somewhere along the retelling chain. As explainx.ai flagged when covering Anthropic's Sonnet 5 pricing lock, sticker price differences between labs are usually larger, not smaller, than the rounded-off headline number that survives a few reposts.

Does it actually "match" Fable 5 on benchmarks?

Partially, and only on one number. SpaceXAI's own August 12, 2026 launch table — covered in full in explainx.ai's Grok 4.6 launch evals post — puts Grok 4.6 High at 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index against Fable 5 Max's 62. That's a one-point gap, about 98% of Fable's score on that single composite metric, which is the number most likely behind the "matches" framing.

But the AA Intelligence Index is a blend of nine separate benchmarks, and the same table shows the two models trading leads underneath it:

Fable 5 leads four of the seven rows shown here, all of them coding-specific. Grok 4.6 leads the knowledge-work rows. "Matches on benchmarks" is a defensible read of the single composite index; it is not an accurate read of the coding-specific rows a developer actually cares about when picking a default agent model. explainx.ai's separate third-party comparison found the same divergence in practice: on Bug Hunt Bench v10's 105 seeded bugs, Grok 4.6 fixed 42 bugs for $22.73 while Fable 5 at max effort fixed 34 for $104.49 — Grok wins on cost-per-fix by a wide margin, but neither model is close to solving the benchmark (51 of 105 bugs survived every model tested).

The decision framework: cost-vs-capability, not sticker price

A cheaper model landing next to the frontier on a platform you already use changes the calculus, but not in the way a single "matches at 60% cheaper" headline suggests. Four questions actually decide whether switching makes sense:

1. What's your actual token ratio? List-price discounts on input and output tokens are not the same number — Grok 4.6 is 80% cheaper on Fable 5's input rate but 88% cheaper on output. A workload that emits long completions (agentic coding, long-form generation) will see savings closer to the output-side discount; a workload that's mostly context-stuffing (RAG, large-document analysis) will see savings closer to the input-side discount. Blend your own ratio before quoting either number.

2. Does the task match where each model actually leads? Per the eval table above, route coding-heavy agent work where Fable 5 leads (CursorBench, FrontierCode, APEX-Agents/SWE) differently than knowledge-work tasks where Grok 4.6 leads (GDPVal, Harvey LAB). A single default model across all task types leaves savings or accuracy on the table either way.

3. Does effort tier matter more than model identity for your workload? explainx.ai's Claude Code model vs effort piece and the Bug Hunt Bench data above both make the same point: a model run at a lower effort tier can cost a fraction as much for a real accuracy hit, and that swing is often larger than the swing between two different models at matched effort. Compare apples to apples before crowning a winner.

4. What does cost-per-completed-task actually look like, not cost-per-token? What this means for teams choosing a model this week

If your workload is knowledge-work or research-heavy and you're currently paying Fable 5 or Opus 5 rates, Grok 4.6's verified 80-88% discount against Fable 5 is a real, immediate reason to benchmark it on your own tasks — especially now that it's reachable through Perplexity's Agent API alongside its existing SpaceXAI API and Cursor access. If your workload is coding-agent-heavy, the same eval table that shows near-parity on the composite index also shows Fable 5 leading every coding-specific row, so the "matches at lower cost" pitch needs your own test before it becomes your default.

Either way, the actual story here isn't as clean as the headline. Perplexity did add Grok 4.6 — quietly, as an API entry, not a banner announcement. The discount is real and, against Fable 5 specifically, considerably larger than the number being repeated. The benchmark "match" is real on one composite index and not real on the coding-specific rows underneath it. All three of those nuances matter more than the three-word summary that made it onto the aggregator feed.
