Paul Graham's August 25 essay is not a pitch for entrepreneurship minors. It is a teardown of everything universities bolt on when they want to look founder-friendly.

On August 25, 2026, @paulg published How Universities Should Prepare Founders and tweeted the link. The thread cleared 80K+ views quickly; Y Combinator reposted it. The argument is vintage Graham — simple on the surface, uncomfortable for administrators — and it lands in the same August run as his build LLMs at 17 tweet and his math vs writing / verifiable rewards take from earlier in the month.

What Graham is actually answering

YC sees applicants after college. Graham compares the batch to grad school: partners have twenty years of pattern-matching on who succeeds. The filter is deliberately boring:

They want people who are good at building things and have a habit of doing it.

Product is the hard part of startups — knowing what to build and being able to build it. That knowledge comes from computer science, mechanical engineering, molecular biology, not management or finance. The liberal-education angle is real: customers do not care what you majored in, so founders can study whatever interests them as long as they get good at building.

"Building" is broad. Steve Jobs's calligraphy mattered for desktop publishing; Mark Zuckerberg was a psychology major who happened to be good at programming. Graham does not want a sharp STEM-only line — he wants powerful ideas, which smart people already seek out.

Graham claims only two institutional changes matter:

1. Make startups feel possible

Belief is unevenly distributed. YC application volume by alumni school is a rough proxy: Harvard applicants run about 2× Yale and Princeton. Graham reads that as custom, not IQ — if Yale and Princeton normalized startups the way Harvard does, he thinks they could at least double how many students try.

At schools without startup culture yet, the fix is showing founders in real life. Until you have seen one, startups feel like something other people do. Live talks pop the bubble twice: founders seem impressive and human, especially when they admit early cluelessness.

Inspiration scales inversely with age and fame. A founder in their mid-20s, three years into a ~$200M company, can beat a billionaire on relatability — roughly 20× easier to identify with even if 20× less famous.

That has a builder corollary for AI-era students: you do not need a TechCrunch headline to copy the habit. A peer shipping a loop-engineered agent workflow or a local model stack on a laptop is closer to the useful archetype than a keynote about "the future of AI."

2. Encourage own projects — especially unofficial ones

Side projects are not a nice-to-have. Graham gives four reasons:

Reading period — the two-trillion-dollar calendar hack

Microsoft and Meta share a origin detail few people notice: both started during Harvard reading period — the gap after classes end and before finals. Students are on campus with nothing due tomorrow. That constraint relief is enormous for the most ambitious.

Graham's provocative extrapolation: extend that unstructured time and you extend the factory for big companies. Universities resist giving time back because administrators act; they do not merely abstain. Letting energetic students roam feels like doing nothing.

It also requires turning a blind eye. Gates broke rules bringing Paul Allen into the lab for Altair Basic. Zuckerberg's Facemash earned disciplinary probation. Novel projects are messy; official recognition kills many of them. Graham's contemporary example: students flying drones out of line of sight — do not escalate.

The cost is real: less energetic students will waste free time. Graham accepts that trade. Variation at the top matters more than moving the median — same logic he uses for income inequality in the footnotes.

What universities cannot teach — and what mimics teaching

Starting a startup is like chemistry or painting: you learn by doing. A honest class would be a lab where students actually start companies. Graham says YC is that lab — and you cannot cram YC into a full-time degree without farce:

  • No funding for student companies
  • Startups consume all time while students take three other classes
  • If a company works, do they drop out or abandon a live business?

Hence the fake substitute: business plan competitions. Graham calls them positively misleading — they train founders to win investors with stories instead of users with prototypes. Fundraising is a necessary evil; the core is product.

The correct inversion for students:

Build things without thinking about whether they'll turn into startups.

Why the optimal university looks "too quiet"

If a school did everything right, observers would see:

  • Students taking hard classes out of genuine interest
  • Friends eagerly collaborating on non-curricular builds
  • Graduates with building ability + habit
  • Some side projects becoming incipient startups

Parents and rankings would ask: Where is the Entrepreneurship Center? Where are the classes on "entrepreneurship"? Graham's answer: those visible additions often drag you away from the optimal path. Spare money should fund CS and engineering faculty, not deans of entrepreneurship.

Business schools add error, in his view — they train the managerial class of twentieth-century industrial firms, not founders. Skills for running large companies ≠ skills for starting them.

The strategy is to stand firm until outcomes speak: organic culture plus multiple successful alumni founders per year becomes undeniable.

AI, CS, and the August essay cluster

None of these contradict each other. They stack: learn powerful ideas deeply, build habitually, defer startup cosplay, and do not confuse investor pitches with user value.

For practitioners already out of school, the transferable lesson is unchanged: Andrew Ng's skills map and loop engineering for agents are the post-campus version of "powerful ideas + projects."

  • Graham joked "It worked for Odeo" when reading period came up — a wink at how unstructured time also produces famous failures.

None of that alters the institutional prescription: culture + calendar + benign neglect.

What students and builders should do Monday morning

Graham is writing for universities, but the consumer of the essay is usually a student or early-career builder. Translating:

If you are in college

  1. Optimize for building skills in at least one hard domain — CS, hardware, bio, design — not for credential labels that sound founder-ish.
  2. Protect one unstructured block per term for a project with no grade attached. Treat reading period like a product sprint, not catch-up.
  3. Find cofounders on projects, not at networking mixers — ship something small together before you incorporate.
  4. Ignore business plan competitions as training; if you enter, treat the pitch as theater and keep building afterward.
  5. Show up to talks by founders five to eight years ahead of you, not only celebrity keynotes.

The students choosing startups over internships trend is compatible with Graham only if "startup" means building, not fundraising performance.

If you are already working

  • Run side projects that look unrelated to your job title — Graham's bellwether argument says interesting builders spot value before the market names it.
  • Prefer prototypes over decks when testing ideas; same anti-pattern as when answers get cheap, trust is the job — users trust what works, not what sounds good.
  • Study foundations (local inference, evals, harness design) even if your day job is mostly meetings.

If you run a university program

  • Measure projects shipped, not events hosted.
  • Fund departments that teach powerful ideas; freeze new entrepreneurship branding unless you can prove it increases building hours.
  • Formalize less, tolerate more — within safety and ethics bounds.

Honest limits of the essay

Graham writes from YC's applicant pool — heavily US, elite-university skewed. Reading period stories are Harvard-specific; not every campus has that calendar or dorm density.

He underweights financial pressure — students who must work jobs may not have side-project bandwidth even if culture cheers startups. Making startups "feel viable" also requires economic viability, not only inspirational talks.

He is also silent on non-software startup paths where regulatory licensing dominates product iteration — bio and hardware still need labs, safety review, and capital in ways a Facemash-style hack does not.

Those gaps do not invalidate the core: habit + building skill beat entrepreneurship theater. They mean local implementation varies.

How this fits YC's public curriculum in 2026

YC has been unusually essay-forward this year — Paper Club on robotics bottlenecks, open-weights coalition posts, and partner builder content like Gary Tan's return to coding. Graham's university piece is the upstream complement: what should happen before the batch.
