Meshy Skills for Hermes Agent: Generate 3D Models and Print Files From Chat

Meshy, the AI 3D generation service, now has official skills for Hermes Agent that let you ask for a model in plain language and get back a file you can drop into a game engine or send to a printer. Per Meshy's documentation, Meshy Skills for Hermes Agent, there are two skills: meshy-3d-generation and meshy-3d-printing. The skills are open source, sign-in is through a browser, and no API key is needed. The catch is cost: generating models needs a paid Meshy plan and spends credits at API rates.

The pitch is that you can ask for game assets or turn a photo into a printable figurine without leaving the chat. This guide uses Meshy's documentation as the source for what the skills do, how to install them, and what to watch for.

QuestionAnswer
What is it?Two Meshy skills for Hermes Agent: 3D generation and 3D printing prep
CostSkills free and open source; generation needs a paid Meshy plan and credits
Sign-inBrowser, one-time code valid 10 minutes, no API key
RequirementsHermes Agent, Node.js 22.12 or later with npm
OutputsGLB, FBX, OBJ, STL, USDZ, and 3MF for printing
Works elsewhereSame skills used with Codex, Claude Code and Cursor; OpenClaw has its own page

What the generation skill can do

According to Meshy, meshy-3d-generation covers:

  • Text to 3D, image to 3D, and multi-image to 3D.
  • AI texturing and retexturing of models.
  • Remeshing to a polygon budget, useful for game assets.
  • UV unwrapping.
  • Auto-rigging and animation for humanoid characters.
  • Export to GLB, FBX, OBJ, STL or USDZ.

The documentation's example prompts show the intended workflow: make a model of a baby husky and save it as GLB in an assets folder; turn an attached photo into a textured model that keeps its proportions; create three low-poly potion bottles for a game, each under 1,500 triangles; rig a humanoid, add a walking animation and export it as FBX. Follow-up requests reuse the previous result, for example "make a 1,500-face LOD," "now as FBX," or "scale it to 150 mm."

What the printing skill does

meshy-3d-printing handles the steps between a model and a physical object: printability analysis and repair, single-color and multicolor 3MF files, sizing to real-world dimensions, Creative Lab products such as figurines, lamps, keychains and fridge magnets, and handoff to a slicer installed on your computer. Each skill installs separately, so you can add only the printing skill if that is all you need, and Meshy says it also covers the generation steps a print requires.

How to install

Meshy gives three routes. All require Hermes Agent and Node.js 22.12 or later with npm on the machine that runs Hermes.

  1. Let Hermes do it. Paste a message asking Hermes to install the Meshy CLI and the meshy-3d-agent skills from the INSTALL.md file in Meshy's GitHub repository. Hermes checks Node.js, installs the CLI and both skills, and walks you through sign-in.
  2. Hermes commands. Run hermes skills install meshy-dev/meshy-3d-agent/skills/meshy-3d-generation and the same for meshy-3d-printing.
  3. Skills installer. Run npx -y skills add meshy-dev/meshy-3d-agent --skill meshy-3d-generation --skill meshy-3d-printing -g -y -a hermes-agent.

A global npm install -g meshy-cli is not required; without it, the skills run the CLI through npm exec, and a global install only speeds startup. If Hermes does not use the skills in a conversation that was open while you installed them, start a new session. The skills live in the open-source meshy-3d-agent repository. For background on how skills work, see our complete guide to agent skills.

How sign-in works

The first time you ask for a model, Hermes starts the Meshy CLI sign-in and gives you a link and a one-time code. You open the link on any device, enter the code if asked, sign in to Meshy, and click Connect; the page shows that the CLI is authorized, and Hermes continues. The code expires after 10 minutes. Because you can approve from any browser, it also works when Hermes runs on a server or over SSH, which matters for people who run agents on a VPS, as in our Hermes Agent remote VPS guide.

The CLI stores the session in a credentials file under your home config directory, and, in Meshy's words, every agent that runs as the same user on that computer shares the session. That is convenient, but it also means any agent or script running under your user can spend your credits. If you set MESHY_API_KEY, the CLI uses the key instead of the browser session. Meshy's troubleshooting advice is blunt: if Hermes asks for an API key, decline, and never paste a key into a chat.

Costs and the paid-plan catch

Meshy states that the skills are free, but "every generation task spends Meshy credits at API rates," and generating models needs a paid plan. Printability analysis is free, and local print steps such as rescaling or opening a slicer need no sign-in. To keep control of spend, Meshy suggests adding "ask me before spending credits" to your request, so you approve each paid step. For an agent that can loop (retexture, remesh, re-export), that instruction is worth using until you know how many credits a typical job takes. Check Meshy's pricing page for the cost of each task type.

Troubleshooting from the docs

Same skills, many agents

Meshy says the Codex plugin, Claude Code, Cursor and Hermes Agent all use the same two skills from the repository, and it links a separate Meshy skill page for OpenClaw. That is a good sign for portability: the work is in the skill and the CLI, not in a Hermes-specific integration. If you already use Hermes, our Hermes Agent v0.22.0 release notes and the top ten things to do with Hermes Agent show what else the agent can do, and our Hermes versus OpenClaw comparison covers how it differs from another popular agent.

What a session might look like

Based on the documented behavior, a typical session for a small game project would go like this. You tell Hermes you are making a low-poly fantasy prototype and need a treasure chest, three potion bottles and a goblin character. Hermes recognizes the request as 3D work, loads meshy-3d-generation, and, if it is the first time, starts the browser sign-in. It then submits generation tasks through the Meshy CLI, waits for them, and saves the files where you asked, for example an assets folder in your project. You then ask for a lower-polygon version of the chest, a retexture in a different style, and a rig and walk cycle for the goblin, each a follow-up that reuses the earlier result. At the end you ask for the files as GLB for your engine.

For a print project the flow differs: you provide a photo or a description, the generation steps run, and the printing skill checks whether the mesh is watertight and printable, repairs problems, scales it to the real-world size you gave, and writes a 3MF, with multiple colors if you asked for them. If you have a slicer installed, it can hand the file over. Since the printing skill's local steps need no sign-in, you can also use it on a model you made elsewhere.

Who this is for

table · 2 cols
UserWhy it helps
Indie game developersFast placeholder and prototype assets without leaving the editor or chat
Makers and 3D printing hobbyistsPhoto to printable figurine with repair and sizing built in
Teams already using Hermes, Codex, Claude Code or CursorOne skill set across agents
Teams needing production-grade artUseful for drafts; plan on artist cleanup

The broader lesson is about skills as a distribution channel. Vendors with an API or CLI increasingly ship a skill so that any agent that supports the format can use their product, and the agent handles the glue: checking dependencies, signing in, choosing parameters and chaining steps. For the vendor, that moves usage and credit spend into agent workflows. For users, it makes the tool available in the place they already work, at the price of trusting the agent with a paid account.

Questions to ask before relying on it

  • Quality. AI-generated meshes often need cleanup for production games: topology, scale, rig weights. Test with your pipeline before committing a project.
  • Rights. Check Meshy's terms on commercial use and ownership of generated assets, especially for images you upload.
  • Printability. The skill analyzes and repairs, but physical prints still depend on your printer, material and slicer settings.
  • Security. An agent that can run a CLI with your session can spend money. Keep permissions narrow if the agent runs unattended.
  • Limits. The Meshy documentation does not state polygon limits or quality guarantees.
