Google is replacing Gems — the custom Gemini chatbots you built in a separate manager — with Gemini Skills: saved reusable instructions you run from the same prompt bar. On September 30, 2026, Gemini App product manager Deven Tokuno wrote on The Keyword that Google is "rolling out skills directly into Gemini chat globally" and that Skills "will soon replace Gems as the tool for tailoring instructions for specific tasks."
That sentence is already colliding with three other Google pages, plus a year of people using the word skill for agent SKILL.md packs in Claude Code and Cursor. This post answers the questions people actually type after the headline: can I use it on free Gemini, does / work in Workspace today, what happens to my Gems, is this the same as agent skills, can I share, and who is blocked by geo rules.
TL;DR — what you actually need to know
| Question | Direct answer (as of October 1, 2026) |
|---|---|
| What is a Gemini app Skill? | A saved instruction set (plus optional reference files) that Gemini can auto-apply or that you invoke with / plus the skill name in the prompt bar |
| Is this Gems 2.0? | Yes for consumer chat customization. Skills run inline in the current thread and can stack. Gems were separate chatbots |
| Free personal Gemini? | Keyword: all Google AI subscription tiers. Help (fetched Oct 1): Skills work in chats without a Google AI subscription. Still 18+, personal account, Keep Activity on |
Workspace /skills today? | Mostly no. Keyword says coming weeks. Workspace Updates: Rapid Release Oct 5, Scheduled Oct 19, Gemini-app Skills for Workspace domains Oct 13 |
| Same as Claude/Cursor agent skills? | No. Consumer chat shortcuts vs coding-agent playbooks. Format overlap (SKILL.md upload) is not a shared runtime |
| Share / Drive / Notebooks? | Promised "in the coming weeks," not listed as live in the Sep 30 Keyword feature set |
| App ↔ Workspace sync? | None. Create separately on each surface (Workspace Updates) |
| Gems death clock | Personal: from November 2026 (Keyword) / Settings move Nov 17 (Workspace Updates). Business/enterprise/nonprofit: March 2027. Education: June 2027. Auto-migrate remaining Gems → Skills |
| Opal | Google Labs mini-apps experiment turns down in November with personal Gems. Labs Gems do not migrate |
Can I use Gemini Skills on free Gemini today?
Short version: Google's consumer blog and the current Gemini Apps help page both describe Skills as a chat feature that is not Pro/Ultra-only. That is a change from the older Spark-gated copy some indexes still show.
Tokuno's Keyword post says Skills were "already available in Gemini Spark" and are now rolling into Gemini chat. A footnote states they are "Available to all Google AI subscription tiers; currently available to 18+ with U18 coming soon."
The official Create & manage skills help article, fetched October 1, 2026, lists three hard requirements:
- Be 18 or over.
- Sign in with a personal Google Account. "For now, this feature isn't available if you sign in with a work or school Google Account."
- Have Keep Activity on.
Surfaces: Gemini mobile app, Gemini app on Mac, and gemini.google.com. A FAQ tip on the same page says: "Skills are available without a Google AI subscription and can be used in your chats." That is the sentence that matches the "free personal accounts" recap. Spark tasks and schedules remain a paid Gemini Spark story; canceling Spark pauses tasks and schedules, but the help tip treats chat Skills as still usable.
Caveats you will hit in the product:
- Help also says Google is "gradually making skills available in Gemini chats, starting with personal Google Accounts, so they might not be available in your chats just yet." If Settings → Skills is missing, you are not in the wave yet — that is expected, not a broken install.
- Known bugs (Google's own banner on the help page): manually created skills will not save in the mobile app (create conversationally, or use the web app). Skills with uploaded files cannot be edited in the mobile app or the Mac app (edit on the web).
- An older snapshot of the same help URL, still circulating in search snippets, said Skills were "currently only available in Gemini Spark," required Google AI Pro or Ultra, and carved out the EEA, Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. That text did not appear in the October 1 fetch of the Skills article. Spark's separate help article still lists those geo exceptions for Spark itself. Do not collapse the two.
explainx.ai's read: if you have a personal account, are 18+, Keep Activity is on, and you can open gemini.google.com, try Settings → Skills. If the page exists, you can use chat Skills without buying Spark. If it does not, wait — Google is not promising a single global flip on September 30 despite the Keyword wording.
Does / work in Workspace today?
No for most orgs, and Google's own blogs disagree on the Gemini-app date.
| Source (all Google, all Sep 30, 2026) | Gemini app Skills | Workspace Skills | Gems removal |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Keyword | Rolling out into Gemini chat globally today | Business / enterprise / nonprofit / education "in the coming weeks" | Personal November 2026; Workspace biz/nonprofit March 2027; education June 2027 |
| Workspace Updates | Gradual rollout starts October 13, done by mid-November | Rapid Release October 5–12; Scheduled Release October 19 through mid-November | Gems move to Settings November 17; biz/enterprise no sooner than March 1, 2027; education no sooner than June 1, 2027 |
| Gemini Apps Help | Personal accounts, 18+, Keep Activity; work/school not yet | Not this article | Auto-recreate Gems as Skills when Gems are removed; you can recreate manually sooner |
Android Authority and similar recaps repeat the Workspace Updates calendar (Oct 5 / Oct 13 / Nov 17). Those dates are real on a Google blog. They are not on The Keyword. Prefer Google over aggregators, then flag that two Google blogs conflict.
Until your admin's Rapid or Scheduled wave lands, do not expect /my-skill in Docs, Gmail, or the Gemini side panel. Workspace Updates also says Skills in Workspace are 18+ only, while "skills in the Gemini app will be available to users of all ages" — which conflicts with Keyword's 18+ footnote and Help's 18+ requirement. For a school tenant, wait for the education transition guide rather than guessing from consumer copy.
This is the same week Google named Gemini 4 Argon as a Fairwind-gated frontier model. Skills in chat and Argon in the API are different products. Do not wait for an Argon model ID to try / in Gemini.
What happens to my Gems?
You keep using Gems for now. Google is not deleting them on September 30.
What Google promises:
- Skills will pick up Gems-class features "in the coming weeks": share with others, attach Google Drive files, and attach Gemini Notebook notebooks (Keyword).
- When Gems go away, Google "will automatically migrate your Gems into skills" (Keyword) / "automatically recreate your Gems as skills" (Help). Workspace Updates says remaining Gemini-app Gems become draft skills in the Gemini app.
- You can manually recreate a Gem as a Skill earlier: copy name, description, and instructions on the Skills page; download knowledge files and re-upload them with the skill. Help notes GitHub files are not currently supported as skill knowledge.
Sunset clocks (prefer Google; they still disagree on the personal-account sharpness):
- Personal Google Accounts: Keyword says Gems support is removed starting in November 2026. Workspace Updates says November 17, 2026 Gems move to Settings and remain creatable/editable/usable, with the hard stop later for Workspace SKUs. If you only have a personal account, treat November as the start of the wind-down, not a single midnight cutover, until Help publishes a personal-account day.
- Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit: Keyword March 2027; Workspace Updates no sooner than March 1, 2027. Ask-a-Gem steps in Workspace Studio already cannot be created; existing flows keep working until that date.
- Workspace education: Keyword June 2027; Workspace Updates no sooner than June 1, 2027, including Classroom and Gemini LTI surfaces.
- Opal (Google Labs mini-apps): turns down in November with personal Gems (Keyword footnote).
- Gems by Google Labs: also turn down; Keyword is explicit they will not migrate into Skills.
Skills do not sync. Workspace Updates: "Currently, skills do not sync between the Gemini app and Workspace apps. If you want to use a skill across both platforms, you must create it separately in each." Recreating a Gem once in the consumer app does not put it in Docs.
If you live in the Windows Gemini app, Help's current surface list is web, mobile, and Mac — Windows is not named on the Skills help page. Check Settings in the Windows overlay before assuming / landed there.
How do I create and run one? (the 10-minute version)
Google's help path is enough; this is the operator version.
Create (web is the reliable surface):
- Open gemini.google.com → sidebar Settings → Skills.
- Pick a path: Create with Gemini, a Recommended template, Create manually (name, description, instructions), or Upload a
SKILL.mdfile / folder / zip. - Or type in chat:
Create a skill based on these instructions:and describe the job.
Run:
- Type
/in the prompt bar and pick the skill — the same slash reflex as Claude Code slash commands, except here/loads your saved instruction pack, not a harness builtin like/compact. - Leave a skill activated if you want Gemini to auto-apply it when a prompt looks relevant. Deactivate from the Skills page if it keeps hijacking unrelated chats.
- Stack more than one in the same turn. Keyword's example: a writing-style skill plus a brand-guidelines skill. Workspace Updates' example:
weekly newsletterplusinstitutional brand guidelines, orvendor evaluatorplusexecutive email drafter.
Files:
- Keyword: starting September 30 you can attach plain text, PDFs, or images.
- Help's upload allow-list adds markdown, code (
.py,.sh), config (.json,.yaml,.csv, …), HTML/CSS/SVG, plus.pdf/.jpg/.png. Not supported:.docx,.doc,.xlsx, other binaries. - Root folder must contain
SKILL.md. Skill name inside that file: lowercase hyphenated (my-new-skill). Total upload ≤ 100 MB. Scripts cannot hit the network.
Keyword's own use cases (not ours): prep a presentation (outline, talking points, hostile Q&A); match your writing style across Workspace apps; always return three to five viewpoints on a decision.
Copy-paste starters that match those:
Create a skill named prep-deck. When I paste a messy project update, output:
(1) a 6–8 slide outline, (2) 30-second talking points per slide,
(3) five hostile questions with one-sentence answers. Do not invent metrics.
Create a skill named voice-match. Instructions: rewrite my draft in my
voice using the attached samples. Keep claims I made. Flag anything you
added. Never use em dashes.
Manage activate / deactivate / delete only on the Skills page — Help says you cannot do those from a chat thread. Deleting a skill cannot be undone. Download exports a .zip.
Is this the same as Claude agent skills / SKILL.md?
No. Same English word, overlapping filename, different product. If you skip one section, skip to this table.
Google's Workspace Updates post even says Skills are "built entirely on the open, Markdown-native SKILL.md standard" so you can "copy skills you've created on other platforms into the Gemini app and Workspace apps." That sentence is why timelines and GitHub READMEs will get this wrong for the next year.
| Gemini app Skills (this news) | Agent skills (pillar guide) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | People chatting in Gemini | People running coding agents |
| Where it lives | gemini.google.com, Gemini mobile, Gemini Mac app (Help) | .claude/skills/, .agents/skills/, Cursor, Gemini CLI / Antigravity, etc. |
What /name does | Injects saved instructions into this chat | Often lists or triggers a host command or a repo skill, depending on the harness |
| Runtime | Gemini's consumer chat / Spark tasks | The agent host: tools, files, shells, MCP |
Can it rm -rf your project? | No. Help: scripts cannot perform external actions | Yes, if the host grants that tool |
| Distribution | Your Google account. Sharing is still "coming weeks" | Folders, npx skills add, explainx.ai /skills |
SKILL.md | Import format for a chat Skill | Source of truth the agent loads with progressive disclosure |
Related Google surfaces that are also not this launch:
- Skills in Chrome — saved Gemini-in-Chrome prompts that run on the current tab (
/or+). Browser, April 2026. - google/skills and gemini-skills for AI Studio / coding agents — actual agent packs you install into Claude Code, Cursor, or Gemini CLI.
If your workflow is "teach the coding agent our deploy checklist," keep using agent skills and the /skills registry. If your workflow is "stop retyping how I want a slide outline in Gemini chat," use Gemini app Skills. Uploading a repo SKILL.md into Gemini chat does not give Gemini a computer.
That last gap showed up immediately in public reaction to the Google/Gemini app announcement: some users compared Skills unfavorably to products that let an agent use a computer. The comparison is directionally right. Gemini app Skills are instruction reuse, not a desktop-control agent. Spark tasks/schedules are closer to "do this later," still not a general computer-use runtime. Do not buy Skills as an operator replacement for a coding harness.
ChatGPT also shipped a Skills surface on the same SKILL.md idea; explainx.ai's ChatGPT Skills guide is the consumer-chat analog on that side. Gemini's launch is Google catching the slash-invoked saved prompt pattern, not a new agent standard.
What people are asking (limitations included)
Why replace Gems at all? Google's stated reason: Skills stay in the current thread, so you do not context-switch into a Gem persona, and you can layer instruction packs. Gems were one custom bot per conversation. That is a real UX win if you actually stack skills; it is a regression if your Gem was the conversation (a tutor that never leaves character). Auto-migration to draft skills is the safety valve — open the draft and tighten the description so auto-apply does not fire on every chat.
Will my Gem tools survive? Recaps of Help list features Skills do not yet support that some Gems used: video creation, music creation, Canvas, Deep Research, guided learning, GitHub knowledge files. Keyword does not enumerate that denylist; Help is the place to re-check before you delete a Gem that depended on those tools.
Sharing with a class or a company? Not on day one of the chat rollout. Keyword: sharing plus Drive/Notebook attachments come "in the coming weeks." Workspace has a separate Docs-based skill builder and admin controls (Workspace Updates). Until sharing ships, treat a Skill as account-local.
Geo and Spark. Be honest: we cannot certify that EEA/UK/Switzerland/Nigeria users get chat Skills. Spark help still excludes those regions. Skills help (Oct 1 fetch) does not. Keyword says "globally" with an 18+ footnote. Open the Skills page; do not trust a third-party "it's free worldwide" headline.
Windows desktop? Gemini for Windows (Alt+Space) is a real Gemini app. Skills help does not name it. Verify on your build.
Is / going to become @? Some secondary recaps say Google will eventually invoke skills with @. Workspace Studio help already uses @skill-name in Workspace apps. Consumer chat Help says /. Until Google unifies the grammar, learn both.
What this means for what you build or pay
If you teach Gemini a personal writing style or a deck template, migrate now on gemini.google.com. Do not wait for the November auto-migrate if the Gem is one you use weekly — drafts after a forced move are how instruction quality dies.
If you are a Workspace admin, the actionable dates are on Workspace Updates, not The Keyword: Rapid Release Skills October 5, Gemini-app Skills October 13, Gems to Settings November 17, hard Gems stop March 1, 2027 (biz/enterprise) or June 1, 2027 (education). Tell users Skills will not copy from the consumer app. Stop creating Ask-a-Gem Studio steps; that door is already closed.
If you ship agent skills for developers, do not rebrand them as "Gemini Skills" in 2026 marketing. Point people at /skills and the agent skills guide. Google just made the collision worse by accepting SKILL.md uploads into consumer chat.
If you were using Opal mini-apps or Google Labs Gems, export whatever you still care about before November. Those do not ride the Gems → Skills mover.
