Leaked Claude App Strings Tie Fable 5 to Usage Credits and ID Verification

Leaked Claude app strings tied Fable 5 credits to ID verification ahead of the July 1 restore. Fable 5 is live globally now — credits and Persona checks may still apply on consumer plans. Full string analysis.

After the June 12 export-control suspension, Fable 5 is live again July 1 — and the Claude app strings below show how Anthropic prepared the restore flow.

Reporting from M1 (@M1Astra) on X, amplified by Andrew Curran, Chetaslua, and Jimmy Apples, describes new strings in the Claude mobile app that explicitly link Fable 5 access to two mechanisms Anthropic has been building in parallel:

  1. Usage credits — billed outside your Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan
  2. Identity verification — credits appear only after verification completes

One string, quoted in the reporting: "Your credits will be added once your identity is verified."

If accurate, this is the clearest product-level evidence yet that July 8 ID verification is not a generic anti-abuse feature — it is the gate for Fable 5 credits in a US-first restoration scenario.

What M1 Reported — Fable Behind Credits, Credits Behind ID

According to M1's post, the new Claude app strings show Anthropic moving Fable 5 behind the usage credit system — the same metered billing layer Anthropic announced before the ban.

Before June 12, Anthropic's plan was:

  • Fable 5 free for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise through June 22
  • After June 22, Fable 5 would require usage credits at roughly $10/M input and $50/M output tokens — outside included subscription allowances

The ban paused that transition mid-flight. Subscribers got zero billable Fable hours since June 12. The June 22 pricing deadline passed with the model still offline.

The leaked strings suggest Anthropic did not abandon the credit model — it wired verification into the credit pipeline. The implied user flow:

snippet
Request Fable 5 credits → Complete Persona ID verification → Credits added → Spend credits on Fable 5 inference

M1 notes the strings appeared alongside Fable 5 credit updates in the same app bundle change — not as unrelated copy.

Important caveat: App strings are implementation artifacts. They can ship before features go live, describe A/B tests, or reflect code paths not yet enabled server-side. @AnthropicAI has not posted a Fable restore announcement as of July 1. Anthropic staff confirmed June 25 that zero Fable traffic is being served.

Treat the strings as strong prep signal, not a launch notice.

How This Contradicts Anthropic's Prior Public Statements

Anthropic's official identity verification support page describes verification as:

  • Rolling out for "a few use cases"
  • Triggered when accessing certain capabilities
  • Part of platform integrity checks or compliance measures
  • Not described as mandatory for all users or tied to Fable 5 by name

Community interpretation through June 30 was that verification was parallel infrastructure — possibly enabling a US-citizens-only Fable path under export control, but not yet productized as a Fable gate.

The leaked strings collapse that ambiguity:

Prior public framingLeaked string implication
Verification for flagged / high-risk accountsVerification required to receive Fable credits
"Certain capabilities" undefinedFable 5 specifically tied to credit system
ID rollout separate from Fable pricingCredits + verification updated in same app change
Fable restore timeline unknownApp code ready for credit-gated restore

Anthropic may argue the support page language was always broad enough to cover Fable. Users reading "flagged accounts only" will reasonably feel misled if every Fable 5 customer must verify and buy credits.

The Washington Connection — Why Curran's Read Matters

Andrew Curran responded to M1's post: "It's unfortunate, but user identity verification may be one of the things that the administration is asking for in order to free Fable."

That aligns with the US-citizens-first restoration scenario we've tracked since the July 8 privacy policy update:

  1. Export control blocks foreign nationals from Fable 5
  2. Anthropic cannot serve Fable at scale without knowing who is a US person
  3. Persona verification + credit allocation post-verify creates an auditable access log
  4. Commerce gets a compliance story; Anthropic gets a revenue path via credits

The UK exemption collapsed June 17. Austria's EU hosting letter has no response. International users still have no carve-out — verification that confirms a foreign passport reinforces the block, it does not bypass it.

Usage Credits vs Subscription — What Changes for Paying Users

If the leaked strings reflect shipping behavior, Fable 5 is not returning as a subscription perk — even for Max and Enterprise customers who expected frontier access included in their plans.

Before ban (announced pricing):

TierFable 5 access
Pro / Max / Team / EnterpriseFree through June 22, then usage credits required
APIMetered Fable endpoints

Implied post-restore model (from strings):

StepRequirement
1Identity verification (government ID + live selfie via Persona)
2Usage credits purchased or allocated post-verification
3Fable 5 inference debits credits — not subscription inclusion

Opus 4.8, Sonnet, and Haiku presumably remain on subscription rails. Fable 5 becomes a verified, metered premium tier — closer to how API customers already buy capacity than how consumers expect "Max plan includes everything."

For enterprise buyers who signed contracts assuming Fable sat inside Claude Enterprise, this is a commercial renegotiation waiting to happen. Watch Anthropic's enterprise comms if strings go live.

Fable 5 "Spotted Again" — UI vs Real Access

Jimmy Apples noted Fable 5 spotted again in the app alongside identity verification strings — echoing the June 25 Claude Code model-picker bug that Anthropic staff debunked.

Pattern to watch:

  • Strings / picker visibility = client-side prep or stale UI
  • Actual inference routing = server-side enablement Anthropic has denied since June 25

Until Anthropic's news page or official X accounts confirm restore, assume Opus 4.8 fallback and treat app sightings as telemetry of upcoming flow, not working access.

What International Users Should Take From This

The leaked strings, if accurate, reinforce the international access picture — they do not improve it:

  • Verification confirms nationality under US export law
  • Foreign passport holders who verify remain foreign nationals
  • Credits post-verify only help users legally permitted to receive Fable transfers

Regional guides:

  • UK — exemption dead, AISI trust didn't help
  • Europe — Austria EU letter, GDPR friction
  • India — TCS deal, longest queue

Alternatives unchanged: GLM-5.2, Kimi K2.7-Code, OpenRouter Fusion.

Timeline — Where This Fits (Day 19)

DateEvent
June 9Fable 5 launches globally
June 12US export-control suspension — global offline
June 17UK exemption proposal collapses
June 22Announced free-pricing deadline passes — Fable still offline
June 25Anthropic staff: zero Fable traffic
June 26–27Mythos partial restore for US Annex A only; Axios "within days" Fable lift — unconfirmed
June 28Austria EU hosting letter
June 30Day 18 — weekend passes, no restore
July 1Leaked app strings tie Fable credits to ID verification
July 8Anthropic privacy policy + Persona verification effective date
August 1Executive Order covered-model framework deadline

Most likely near-term sequence if strings reflect intent:

  1. July 8 — verification infrastructure goes live
  2. Days after — Fable 5 credits enabled for verified US persons
  3. International — unchanged until full directive lift or separate licensing

What to Do Now

If you are a US Claude subscriber waiting for Fable 5

  • Prepare ID documents — passport or driver's license, physical in hand
  • Budget for usage credits — do not assume Max includes Fable post-restore
  • Watch official channels only — Is Fable 5 Back? updates on confirmation

If you are international

  • Do not expect verification to unlock Fable — plan on alternatives through summer 2026
  • Do not use VPN workarounds — nationality-based export control, not IP geolocation

If you are building production systems

  • Abstract model layer — strings confirm Fable is a gated premium SKU, not default Claude
  • Enterprise contracts — clarify Fable pricing and verification with Anthropic account teams before July 8

The Honest Answer

Do the leaked strings mean Fable 5 is back?

No — not yet. They mean Anthropic's app team is building the restore UX: credits, verification, copy that tells users exactly when credits land.

Do they change our read on ID verification?

Yes. Verification is no longer a hypothetical path for a hypothetical restore. It is wired into Fable 5's billing surface in app code — contradicting the softer "flagged accounts" public framing.

Should you verify on July 8?

US users who want Fable 5: probably inevitable if strings ship as reported. Evaluate Persona privacy tradeoffs first.

Everyone else: verification without a global directive lift does not restore Fable.
