September 14 is the day the headline and the meter diverge.
Anthropic's ClaudeDevs account announced that Claude Code's temporary 50% weekly limit boost ends September 14, 2026, replaced the same day by a permanent 25% raise over each plan's baseline. Read quickly, that sounds like good news. Read against what Max users actually have today — a bucket running at 150% of baseline — and the permanent tier at 125% is a net ~17% cut from current capacity.
This is not a secret price hike buried in a changelog. It is arithmetic on a promo Anthropic has extended twice since July. The Claude usage limits timeline tracks every prior change; this post is the September chapter — what changes, for whom, and how to plan before the promo window closes.
TL;DR — the questions people are asking
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| When does the promo end? | September 14, 2026 — same day the permanent 25% raise starts |
| What is ending? | The 50% temporary Claude Code weekly boost |
| What replaces it? | A permanent 25% increase over baseline weekly limits |
| Net change vs today? | ~17% less weekly Claude Code capacity (150% → 125% of baseline) |
| Is baseline going up 25%? | Yes — versus pre-promo baseline, limits rise 25% |
| Who feels the cut? | Anyone budgeting against today's promo-inflated meter |
| What to do now? | Spend promo capacity on real agent work; re-baseline team plans after Sept 14 |
| Where to verify? | claude /usage — the only live number that matters |
| Why the backlash? | Headline anchors on baseline ("25% raise"); users anchor on today's meter (~17% cut) |
| What builders want next? | Honest comms and simpler limits — e.g. Fable counting against the same weekly bucket |
The math — why "25% raise" can still feel like a cut
Anthropic publishes plan multipliers, not fixed message counts. The cleanest way to see the September swap is with a single baseline unit:
| State | Weekly Claude Code allowance (relative) |
|---|---|
| Original baseline (pre-July promo) | 100 |
| Current 50% promo (through Sept 13) | 150 |
| Permanent tier starting Sept 14 | 125 |
Moving from 150 → 125 is a reduction of 25 points on a 150-point scale — 25 ÷ 150 ≈ 16.7%, rounded to 17% in community shorthand.
Anthropic is telling the truth on both axes:
- Versus August 2025 baseline, limits permanently rise 25% — a real improvement over the pre-promo era documented in the July 18 extension post.
- Versus what you have this week, limits fall ~17% when the 50% promo expires.
Both statements are correct. They describe different comparison dates. Subscription marketing naturally anchors on baseline; daily users anchor on today's meter.
What Anthropic actually announced
The late-August ClaudeDevs post (the developer-relations account for Claude Code) stated three things in one breath:
- The 50% higher Claude Code weekly limit promo ends September 14, 2026.
- A permanent 25% increase over standard weekly limits replaces it the same day.
- The permanent raise is framed as making part of the summer capacity expansion stick — language Anthropic first tested in July when it said it hoped to make the boost permanent while warning capacity could stay tight.
That July hedging matters. Anthropic never promised the full 50% would become permanent — only that it was exploring a partial retention. September 14 is the partial retention landing: half of the promo, permanently.
Theo's alternative draft — and the developer trust backlash
The arithmetic in this post is not controversial. What's driving the quote-tweet heat is which date you put in the headline.
Theo Browne (@theo, t3.gg) responded to the late-August ClaudeDevs post with an alternative announcement draft — not because the numbers were wrong, but because the framing read like a raise to people living at 150% of baseline. His suggested honest version hit four beats Anthropic's post skipped:
- Name the promo ending first — the 50% summer boost really does end September 14.
- State the net change versus today — permanent 25% over baseline is ~17% less than the promo meter Max users see this week.
- Acknowledge the squeeze — teams that replanned sprints around 150% weekly Claude Code capacity take a real hit, not a vibes shift.
- Explain compute constraints without spin — partial permanence is a capacity tradeoff; don't pretend the headline number is the number on
/usage.
Theo's draft is essentially a comms template for any subscription limit change where a promo expires and a partial retention lands below the promo peak. Both statements can be true; only one matches what the meter shows on September 13.
Why developers call it a trust problem
The backlash isn't "Anthropic lied about math." It's comparison-date arbitrage — the same pattern explainx.ai flagged in the Claude Max usage-limits lawsuit:
| Audience | Natural anchor | September 14 reads as… |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing / baseline historians | Pre-July 2025 weekly cap | +25% — a permanent win |
| Daily Claude Code users | Today's /usage bar at 150% | −17% — a cut from lived capacity |
When the official account leads with "+25%" and buries "50% promo ending" in the same breath, developers hear 150 → 125 described as an increase. That lands as condescension even when the footnotes are technically accurate — especially after a summer of extensions, Fable billing class changes, and limit whiplash that trained power users to read every ClaudeDevs post for hidden meter movement.
The trust problem is cumulative: each technically-defensible headline that omits the user's comparison date erodes the assumption that /usage and the announcement describe the same reality.
The wishful ask: one weekly bucket, Fable included
Separate from comms, reply-thread sentiment converged on a product ask Theo and others keep repeating: stop burning Fable against a separate weekly sub-limit so the full plan allowance works with the model you actually prefer.
Today, Fable 5 on Max/Team can still route through usage credits or capped weekly share depending on promo state — meaning "weekly limit" and "which model you pick" are not the same lever. Developers want the September 14 retention to apply to one weekly meter regardless of model choice: pick Fable for hard tasks without watching a second bucket drain faster than Sonnet or Opus.
Anthropic has not announced that consolidation. Treat it as community wishful thinking, not roadmap — but it explains why a "permanent raise" headline feels especially hollow to Fable-first builders who already juggle two limit stories.
Who is affected — and who is not
Most affected: Max and Team Premium subscribers who run Claude Code loops daily and sized their workflows against the 50% promo. A team that standardized on "we get X hours of Opus agent time per week" using today's /usage bar will need to shrink X by roughly one-sixth on September 14.
Less affected: Pro users primarily on usage credits for Fable-tier models rather than included Claude Code weekly hours — a different meter, though credit pricing and model access still bind.
Contextually affected: Teams comparing Anthropic to OpenAI Codex, which has been raising capacity and resetting limits in the opposite direction. The Claude Code vs. Codex rate-limit comparison is worth re-reading with September 14 in mind.
Unaffected structurally: The rolling 5-hour window limits (permanently doubled May 6, 2026) and the weekly cap structure introduced August 2025 — only the weekly size changes, not the two-meter architecture explained in the usage limits timeline.
What to do before September 14
1. Check live meters, not articles.
claude /usage
Note both the 5-hour and weekly percentages and reset times. Screenshot them for your team — community trackers and blog posts (including this one) are snapshots, not live feeds.
2. Spend promo capacity deliberately.
Queue the work that actually needs long autonomous runs: test suite generation, migration scripts, documentation passes, security reviews. Do not burn the remaining promo on one-line fixes.
3. Re-baseline team throughput.
If your sprint planning assumed "150% weekly Claude Code," replan for "125%" starting September 14. That is a real capacity planning change, not a vibes shift.
4. Evaluate harness diversification.
A ~17% weekly cut is exactly when multi-harness fluency pays off. Know how to run the same task in Codex CLI or Cursor on Claude/Gemini so a single provider's limit change does not halt the team.
5. Watch for a last-minute extension.
Anthropic extended the 50% promo twice (through August 19, then August 31). A third extension before September 14 is possible but not something to plan on. Treat September 14 as firm until ClaudeDevs posts otherwise.
How this fits the broader limit story
Since August 2025, Anthropic has tightened structurally (weekly caps), loosened temporarily (March off-peak promo, July–September 50% Claude Code boost), and loosened permanently on one axis (May 6 doubling of 5-hour limits via Colossus capacity). September 14 is the first permanent partial retention of a weekly promo — and it still lands below the promo peak.
The Claude Max usage-limits lawsuit remains relevant background: subscribers have contested whether marketed multipliers match delivered capacity. A permanent 25% raise that reads as a 17% cut versus today's meter is the kind of framing gap that keeps that dispute alive — and the late-August Theo draft backlash shows the same gap playing out in public before the cut even lands.
