Apple's September 9, 2026 keynote was framed around hardware — iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Watch Series 12, and AirPods 5 — but Siri AI and Apple Intelligence touch nearly every product Apple announced. This post pulls every AI feature from the event into one place, organized by what each feature actually does rather than which box it ships in, with exact rollout dates and what's still in beta.
TL;DR — every AI feature and when you get it
| Feature | What it does | Rollout |
|---|---|---|
| Siri AI | Conversational assistant with personal context, app actions, world knowledge | Beta, iOS/iPadOS/watchOS 27, Sept 14, 2026 — English first, not in EU |
| Live Rewind | Replays last 15 seconds of nearby conversation on Apple Watch | Beta, later 2026 — English only, not in EU, needs iPhone 16+ |
| Siri Recap | Generates a title + key points after a conversation | Beta, later 2026 — same restrictions as Live Rewind |
| Sound Recognition | Alerts deaf/hard-of-hearing users to sirens, alarms, doorbells | Ships with Series 12 / Ultra 4 |
| Live Translation | Real-time translated audio through AirPods | Now on the entire AirPods lineup, incl. $129 AirPods 5 |
| Call Context | Surfaces relevant app info (e.g. a Mail confirmation code) when calling a business | iOS 27 |
| Smart Take / Duo Preview / Kid Cue | Camera AI on iPhone Duo — waits for everyone to be ready, previews on outer screen | Ships with iPhone Duo, Oct 23, 2026 |
| Health app redesign | Insights + Longevity tabs, Health Age, movement evaluations via vision AI | Later in 2026, US English first |
| Readiness score | Daily 0-10 recommendation from activity, vitals, sleep | Ships with Watch Series 12 |

The architecture underneath all of it
Every feature below runs on the same two-layer system Apple has built out since introducing Apple Intelligence: on-device models for fast, private, low-stakes tasks, and Private Cloud Compute for anything that needs more reasoning power than a phone or watch chip can provide locally, with Apple's stated architecture keeping even the cloud-routed requests auditable and not retained. This split matters practically: it's why some features (Sound Recognition, Live Rewind's local audio processing) work with zero network dependency while others (Siri AI's broader reasoning, Siri Recap's summarization) need connectivity.
It's also why nearly every server-side feature in this post carries the same caveat in Apple's own fine print: daily usage limits that vary "by feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors," with Apple stating plainly that "expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future." Budget for that when planning around any of these capabilities professionally — free-tier access to the heaviest reasoning features is not guaranteed to stay unmetered.
Siri AI — the assistant underneath everything
Siri AI is the umbrella product name for Apple's overhauled assistant, and it's the common thread running through every device announced. It offers:
- Personal context understanding — finding a photo, email, or note based on natural-language description rather than exact keyword search.
- App actions — editing a message you just sent, adding a song to a playlist, based on what you're doing in the moment.
- Broad world knowledge — referencing information online for detailed, up-to-date answers, not just on-device data.
- Customizable, expressive voices — pick a voice, then adjust expressiveness and pace.
- A dedicated Siri app — conversations sync across devices; you can pin conversations and start new ones, mirroring how a chat-based AI assistant app works rather than a single-shot voice command.
Siri AI ships as a beta with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and watchOS 27 on September 14, 2026, for devices set to English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish expected in October. It is not initially available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS — a regulatory carve-out consistent with how Apple has staged several AI features in the EU throughout 2026.
Audio Intelligence — the feature getting the most scrutiny
Audio Intelligence is the cluster of always-available, opt-in features built around Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4's new S11 chip and its Secure Exclave — a hardware-isolated compartment Apple says processes audio "in complete isolation from the rest of the system, then immediately deletes it."
| Feature | What it does | Privacy design |
|---|---|---|
| Live Rewind | Double-press the Digital Crown to see the last 15 seconds of nearby conversation as a text snippet | Audible chime + full-display animation when active; no stored recording |
| Siri Recap | Runs on a schedule or manually; generates a title and key points afterward, saved in the Siri app | End-to-end encrypted; user sets exactly when it runs |
| Sound Recognition | Alerts deaf/hard-of-hearing users to sirens, alarms, doorbells, a crying baby — even without an iPhone nearby | On-device detection only |
| Shazam | Faster on-wrist song identification via the Smart Stack | No change to prior privacy model |
Both Live Rewind and Siri Recap require Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4 paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later (excluding iPhone 16e), ship as a beta later in 2026, launch in English only, and are not available in the EU at launch. Apple's privacy design explicitly avoids speaker identification and full transcription — Siri Recap produces "a brief, high-level summary," not a transcript — but the always-available framing has already drawn the most public scrutiny of any feature from this event, on grounds of bystander consent rather than the technical privacy engineering itself. Our full event coverage goes deeper on that reaction, including the Hacker News debate over bystander consent.
Live Translation — now everywhere, not just Pro
Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence, is now available across the entire AirPods lineup — including the new $129 AirPods 5, not just AirPods Pro models. Users access it by pressing both stems simultaneously, saying "Siri, start Live Translation," or using the iPhone's Action button, and it works alongside head-gesture responses ("Siri Interactions") that let you nod or shake your head to answer Siri hands-free.
Widening this from a Pro-only feature to the entire lineup — a $129 product — is arguably a bigger accessibility move than any single hardware spec bump from the event: it puts real-time translated audio within reach of anyone buying the cheapest AirPods Apple sells, not just customers already paying for the premium tier.
Call Context and Suggestions — AI that reaches across your apps
Two related but distinct features focus on surfacing relevant information at the right moment, without you asking:
- Call Context proactively pulls relevant information from across your apps when you're calling a business — Apple's own example is surfacing a confirmation code from Mail when you call an airline, so you're not digging through your inbox mid-call.
- Suggestions in Messages and Mail offer contextual quick actions inside a conversation — adding a calendar event or searching for a photo with a tap, based on what's being discussed. Suggestions in Messages specifically are coming in "a future software update," per Apple, so this one is a roadmap item rather than a day-one iOS 27 feature.
Both depend on Apple Intelligence's personal-context capability — the same underlying reasoning that powers Siri AI's ability to find things across your data — applied proactively rather than only on request.
Camera and photo AI — from iPhone Duo to Image Playground
iPhone Duo's camera system ships with several AI-driven features tied specifically to its dual-display form factor:
- Smart Take waits until everyone in frame is ready before capturing, instead of racing a self-timer.
- Duo Preview / Kid Cue use the outer screen to help subjects look at the lens when the rear camera doubles as a "selfie" cam.
- Photographic Styles 3 adds texture and grain controls on top of tone and color.
- Spatial Reframing, the Extend tool, and an enhanced Clean Up tool (beta) round out intelligent editing — Clean Up specifically now handles larger objects with higher-quality infill and better background blending.
Separately, Image Playground continues to let users create images "in just about any style, including photorealistic," modified with just a description or touch — a general-purpose creative tool available across Apple Intelligence-enabled devices, not tied to any one camera.
Health, Shortcuts, and Safari — AI reasoning over your own data
The redesigned Health app, arriving later in 2026 starting in US English, is the deepest AI integration into a single Apple app from this event. It adds an Insights tab that surfaces timely health information and a Longevity tab built around Health Age — showing how a user's metrics track relative to their actual age — plus movement evaluations that measure flexibility, strength, and balance using vision-based AI models on iPhone combined with Apple Watch heart-rate data. None of this replaces a doctor: Apple frames it explicitly as wellness insight, not diagnosis.
Elsewhere, Shortcuts now lets you describe an automation in plain language and have it generate the connecting logic across apps — a genuine "no-code via natural language" capability, though it's one of the features explicitly subject to Apple's daily server-side usage limits. Safari gets AI-assisted tab grouping (automatically clustering related pages into topics) and Notify Me, which monitors a page for changes — a price drop or restock — and alerts you when it's worth acting.
What this means if you're building on top of Apple's platforms
- Plan around beta timelines, not launch-day availability. Several of the highest-profile features here (Siri AI, Live Rewind, Siri Recap) ship as betas with real regional and language gaps — don't design a product experience around iOS 27 launch day that assumes Siri AI is broadly available.
- Budget for usage limits on anything server-side. Siri AI, intelligent photo editing, Image Playground, and Shortcuts' cloud models all carry daily caps today, with a paid tier for expanded access already telegraphed. If your product idea depends on unlimited access to any of these, that assumption needs revisiting.
- EU availability is consistently delayed across nearly every AI feature in this event, not just Siri AI — a pattern worth tracking if you're building for or shipping in that market on Apple's timeline rather than your own.
- The privacy architecture (Secure Exclave, no stored recordings, no speaker ID) is genuinely more rigorous than most third-party "AI notetaker" products, which is worth knowing if you're evaluating whether to build a competing feature or simply integrate with Apple's.
