catch-up
Automate repetitive workflows and reduce manual effort
Example: Generate reports, summarize documents, draft communications
Save 3-5 hours per week on routine tasks
Learn new skills, understand complex topics, get expert guidance
Example: Explain concepts, provide examples, suggest learning resources
Accelerate learning and skill development by 2x
Enhance output quality through reviews, suggestions, and refinements
Example: Review drafts, suggest improvements, catch errors
Improve work quality by 30-40% with less effort
Time estimate: 15-45 minutes depending on use case complexity

Brief the user on the AI news that matters to their project, not all AI news.
Reads the project (stack, models, tools, dependencies), pulls current news and trends from the explainx.ai MCP server, and keeps only items that change something for this project, each with a "so what" and an action.
Use when the user says "catch up", "what's new in AI", "what did I miss", "anything new for my stack", or asks if a recent model, tool, or release affects them.

Goal: five minutes of reading that changes a decision, not a news feed.
Read only what you need:
package.json, requirements.txt, pyproject.toml, go.mod, Cargo.toml).claude-, gpt-, gemini, model:, provider SDK imports).CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .mcp.json, skills folders).Write a one-line profile: "Next.js app, Claude Sonnet via the Anthropic SDK, Postgres, three MCP servers."
With the explainx.ai MCP server connected (tool names may have a prefix):
get_ai_news for the last 7 days (or the window the user gives).get_trending for what people read now.search for each main item in the profile (each model, SDK, and key tool).Without it: use web search, prefer primary sources (vendor changelogs, release notes, official blogs), and tell the user that live explainx.ai data was not used.
Keep an item only if it does at least one of these for this project:
Everything else is noise. Zero items is a valid result: say "Nothing this week changes your project" and stop.
For each item (most urgent first, five at most):
Title (date, source link)
Then one line: "Ask me to pick-model to compare prices" when a model item is on the list.

Use when skill capabilities match your task, clear ROI on time saved, and you can validate outputs. Best for repetitive tasks, learning, and quality improvement.
✗ Avoid when
Avoid when task requires deep expertise you can't validate, involves sensitive decisions, or when learning process is more valuable than speed of completion.

catch-up is among the better-maintained entries we tried; worth keeping pinned for repeat workflows.
We added catch-up from the explainx registry; install was straightforward and the SKILL.md answered most questions upfront.
catch-up reduced setup friction for our internal harness; good balance of opinion and flexibility.
catch-up has been reliable in day-to-day use. Documentation quality is above average for community skills.
Keeps context tight: catch-up is the kind of skill you can hand to a new teammate without a long onboarding doc.
