Radiative cooling

Dumping waste heat as infrared from a surface, the only practical way a spacecraft rejects chip heat in vacuum.

Ask Melo about this← all terms

Radiated power scales with emissivity, area, and temperature to the fourth power (Stefan-Boltzmann). Earth data centers use air and water. Orbit has neither, so Google's Suncatcher prototype uses heat pipes plus a radiator and can only run about 15 minutes before a thermal pause on a mass-limited plate.
