Python in Excel

Python in Excel is a Microsoft feature that runs pandas, matplotlib, and scikit-learn code inside a spreadsheet cell via the =PY() function, executed in a Microsoft-managed sandbox rather than locally.

It ships separately from Copilot in Excel with its own licensing and rollout wave. Copilot's role on top of it is translation: a user describes an analysis in plain language, and Copilot writes the Python and inserts it into a =PY() cell. Because execution happens in a Microsoft-managed sandbox, workbook data leaves the local session to run — a consideration for regulated data.
