Boris Cherny started Claude Code as a September 2024 side project; Anthropic shipped it publicly in February 2025. The product treats the working directory as the environment and uses tools (edit, bash, search) plus persistent instructions such as CLAUDE.md. It is a coding agent, not a chat sidebar: verification (tests, diffs, logs) sits inside the loop. Codex CLI and similar terminal agents follow the same shape.
